How it works

From a 60-second quiz to a book in your hand.

BookMatcher pairs editorial taste with the curators you actually trust. Here is how the pieces fit together.

The quiz

The quiz is intentionally short. It asks about the moods, tropes, and pace you want from your next read — not the books you have read. The reasoning is simple: the same reader wants different things on different weeks, and a stale list of past favorites tells us almost nothing about what would feel right tonight.

You can retake the quiz any time from Settings. Your reader profile updates immediately, and the surfaces that depend on it — Discover, suggested lists, curator pairings — all reflect the change on the next reload.

Curators & lists

Every recommendation on BookMatcher has a human author. Curators come in four flavors:

  • Editorial — the New York Times, NPR, BookRiot, our own staff.
  • Partner— Barnes & Noble, Powell's, Reese's Book Club, Oprah.
  • Celebrity — authors and public figures whose taste you actually want.
  • Premium reader — community members whose lists have earned an audience.

Follow the ones whose picks you trust. Their new lists show up at the top of your Discover feed.

Library availability (coming soon)

This one is in active development. Soon you'll connect your Libby card once in Settings and every cover across BookMatcher will get a live availability strip: Available now, 2-week wait, or Not at your library— so the book you want is two taps from a hold, not after a hunt. We'll announce it here the day it lands.

Stats & goals

Reading stats are optional but quietly motivating. Set an annual goal, track your streak, and watch the genres you actually read drift over the year. We do not gamify — no leaderboards, no streak shame.

iOS & web

BookMatcher runs as a native iOS app and on the web. Sign in on one and your lists, ratings, quiz, and reading status sync to the other. The web app is built for longer-form browsing; iOS for quick captures and on-the-go list management.
